One of the best parts of being back "home" is being able to visit my Mom, on La Riondaz (1980m or 6,500ft). As many of you know, we spread her ashes near Jean-Pierre's (my uncle and godfather), who died in 1987 skiing down Gasherbrum II, the 13th highest mountain on Earth.
In Switzerland, cairns are built to mark trails, especially above the tree line. Cairns are also erected for memorial commemoration, like here.
Hikers passing by often add a stone for maintenance or to commemorate a person. I always try to find the prettiest stone... like a heart-shaped one!
Two plaques were made and drilled to the face of the mountain, one in honor of my uncle and godfather (left) and one in honor of my Mom (right). Someone strung a beautiful Tibetan prayer flag. Whoever did, thank you!
So next time you're in Leysin, you may enjoy hiking up La Riondaz... And on your way, look out for a couple of stones.
